Archaeology Café: Weaving a Partnership, The Collaborative Journey of Cedar Mesa Perishables Project

February 8 @ 1:00 am - 2:00 am

Join us on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, when Laurie Webster and Louie Garcia will discuss “Weaving a Partnership: The Collaborative Journey of the Cedar Mesa Perishables Project.”

For the past five years, the Cedar Mesa Perishables Project has engaged the expertise of Pueblo fiber artists in its documentation of ancient textiles, baskets, wooden implements, and other organic cultural items from southeastern Utah. In this presentation, archaeologist and project director Laurie Webster and Tiwa-Piro weaver and team member Louie Garcia will trace the project’s collaborative path and discuss how this approach has enriched archaeological understanding of ancestral Pueblo perishable technologies while also stimulating the preservation and revitalization of the Pueblo fiber arts.

About Archaeology Café:
Presented by Archaeology Southwest, a nonprofit organization that explores and protects heritage places while honoring their diverse values, Archaeology Café is an informal forum that brings lifelong learners together with experts.

About this season:
Better for It: Research Conceived in Collaboration with Community

Welcome to the 2022–2023 season of the Archaeology Café, an eight-part series in which we explore the complexities of collaborative research.

One of Archaeology Southwest’s goals is co-creation and co-engagement with Indigenous nations and communities. Come along with us as we learn from this season’s presenters—experts who are conducting collaborative archaeological research that looks toward a more holistic understanding of the meanings and values of heritage.

Join us on the first Tuesday of each month from October through May to hear more about trust-building processes, crucial steps for creating and nurturing relationships, and lessons learned from minor or major stumbles. Gather with your fellow Archaeology Café community members over Zoom and be prepared to expand your thinking—we are!
