Founded by Spanish Jesuit Priest Eusebio Kino, this“ National Historic Landmark” remains an active Franciscan Mission located in the San Xavier District of the Tohono O’odham Nation. The building of this spectacular example of Mexican Baroque architecture began in 1783 and work continued for 14 years before funds ran out. Often referred to as the “White Dove of the Desert ”the building is currently undergoing careful conservation. The site, one of the most photographed locations in Tucson, is considered a “must see” in Southern Arizona. A unique gift shop offers religious as well as Native crafts.
